Blog-a-day #2

I went to a craft fair recently, and the best booth by far was this spectacular one. All types of jewelery, hair clips, earrings, bracelets, and tons of broaches. He’s handmade all these pieces, and really enjoyed helping the women find a perfect piece. Here are some more photos of his work.

Blog-a-day #1

509, originally uploaded by mizuhana.

I figured I’d start my blog-a-day posts with a subject close to me – my home.

There have been a lot of changes in my life this past year. Graduating from university, getting a job at IBM, Tom starting school, and moving into an apartment that wasn’t a thin-walled creepfest are some of the highlights. I guess you could say I’ve finally grown up into an adult… though I’ll always be a kid at heart.

My last apartment was also my first apartment. Tom and I moved in during Christmas of 2006. Word to the wise, as long as you don’t mind “ruining” the x-mas spirit, it’s a great time to move as the roads are empty! Things were rough at times, as can be expected with me being in school. But we managed pretty well. One thing that sucked about that apartment: other than the thin walls (*thump* *crash* *thump*), it was right next to a special public high school for artsy students, which caused the local bus service to be PARALYZED at 8am and 4pm. Hoards of kids everywhere.  One thing that rocked was the awesome swimming pool that was very nearly always empty.

My new apartment is a substantial upgrade. Not only are the walls solid and soundproof, it’s in a great location, and there’s no sketchy people hanging around. We upgraded to a 2-bedroom, a much needed change. Now we can have more than two people over! Carpeting and central AC were also very welcomed.

Today’s photo is trying to capture the flavour of this moment, this time in my life where everything seems to be sorting itself out nicely.

Blog-a-day 2008 Day 0

So it’s the month of November already, that means it’s NaNoWriMo time! But I’m not really much of a writer, not a novel writer at least. However, I can still take the theme of NaNo and use it in my life.

Due to my recent love of sewing, I haven’t been taking any pictures recently of things that aren’t sewing related. So I’ve decided I’ll take and upload a new picture each day before 9pm EST. I also want to write more mini blog posts, so I’ll write a blog post with the photo as well. And since today’s the 4th, I’ll take three photos to make up for the lost time!

Setting goals like these really gives me something to work for, draws attention to the value of my time, but also makes for a fun reoccurring project. I encourage you to strive for something in November as well – set a goal, try to do something new, accomplish something you have been putting off. Because let’s face it, November is a pretty boring month here in Canada – no holidays or events of interest (minus of course Remembrance Day on the 11th), the weather’s pretty mucky and inconsistent… for these reasons and more it’s a great month to dedicate to a task!

Time for Video Games

I’ve been crafting so much recently that it’s overtaken my previous hobby of video games. So it’s time to reset that balance with some serious video game hours.

Yes my friends, Fallout 3 is here, and I intend to get sucked into its deliciously handcrafted story and gameplay.

You can be good or evil or any of the grey parts in between, the story changes based on the skills and levels therein, once you’ve played the game one way, you can come back and play it a totally different way. Oh and it’s set in a post-nuclear radioactive apocalyptic America to boot. This one features Washington DC.

While I did not actually play Fallout 1 or any substantial amount of Fallout 2, thanks to the Internets and YouTube I’ve been able to read and watch the story of those games unfold. It has by far the best story/plot/writing in any video game made to date. It’s the closest thing to actual role-playing available.

Of course, this version of the game is made by Bethesda, makers of The Elder Scrolls series including the recent version Oblivion. They’ve used that same Oblivion engine with improvements in Fallout 3. This is in contrast to Fallout 1 and 2 which were made using the same engine, a 2D-isometric pixel game. This has a lot of longtime fans a bit jilted and worried that Bethesda may somehow ruin the Fallout story, but from everything I’ve seen and watched it’s totally the opposite – the creators are diehard fans of Fallout and have tried their best to make a true-to-theme game using today’s modern technology.

Anyway, enough rambling, it’s time to head out and get my preorder! As with many games nowadays you can purchase a collector’s edition for a few extra bucks, it comes with all sorts of bonuses. This game comes with a lunchbox and a bobblehead. Sweet.

Some Awesome Tutorials

Here are some really cool sewing tutorials I’d like to tackle one day.

Travel Wallet – What a great idea! I know a few people who would love one of these.

Coming and Going Bag ($8) – A neat little bag to investigate once I get into closures. I love adding quilting style into regular sewing projects – you get the quilting fun without the lengthy sewing process :)

Reverse Applique – A really cool idea for adding designs into items.

Little Shopping Bag (pdf) – Looks really easy to make, and very functional!

Walnut Pincushion – So cute!

Patchwork Notebook cover

Kerri Made has a bunch of tutorials including pockets.

Reversible Tote Bag has an interesting pocket as well.

Note Paper Holder

This page (in Japanese) by DROPS shows a lot of neat projects that could be reverse engineered.

Other good ideas.
